How to Build a Web Site With SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) marketing is an important aspect of running a website. Organic traffic derived from search engine rankings is one of the most-sustainable methods of obtaining visitors without spending money on advertising. Successful SEO marketing can result in high rankings in search engines, such as Google, for the specific keywords on your website. Learn how to build a website with proper SEO techniques to drive more visitors to your web page and boost your website’s daily traffic numbers.

1. Build your website. Don’t worry about including SEO techniques in this step of the website creation process. Follow basic HTML standards and include appropriate opening and closing HTML tags. A standards-compliant HTML page should start with <"html"><"title"><"body"> and close with <"/body"><"/html">. Enter the actual formatting and content codes for your web page between the opening and closing <"body"> tags. Formatting codes include <"P"> (for a new paragraph), <"BR"> (for a page break) and <"B"> or <"I"> (for bold or italic text, respectively). If you don’t remember all the HTML commands, read the quick tutorial by the World Wide Web Consortium that sets all standards for Internet websites. (please remove the quotations)

2. Check that the website you’re building includes all necessary files. The most important file is “index.html,” which is the file displayed when a visitor first goes to your SEO website. Verify that all your links are working and that any images you have are included in the folder containing your website files.

3. Launch your File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client and connect to your web hosting server. If you do not have a web host, register for an account. Various companies offer low-cost web hosting services for only a few dollars a month. Many of these hosting plans also include your own dot-com domain. Example companies include 1&1, the world’s largest web hosting company, and GoDaddy (see links in Resources).

4. Drag the HTML files you created in Step 1 to your FTP client. It will automatically upload the files to your web hosting server, replacing any old files currently on the server. Right-click an HTML file in which you wish to integrate SEO marketing techniques and open it in your computer’s default text editor or web design software program, (e.g. Adobe Dreamweaver).

5. Identify five SEO keywords for that individual page. The best SEO keywords are phrases or words for which you wish your website to be displayed when a visitor types those searches into a search engine, such as Google. Focus on unique words or phrases that are searchable but not too common. For example, if you are building a website with SEO for a pet food company, “dog food” would be too common but “organic dog food” or “cheap dog food” might be appropriate SEO keywords.

6. Integrate the SEO keywords into the body, title and headlines on the web page you are editing. Search engines do not like it when an SEO webpage repeats the keywords over and over again. Instead, integrate the SEO keywords into the actual content on your page. For example, write an article about organic dog food if you are trying to get a high search engine ranking for the “organic dog food” search term.

7. Save your SEO-modified web page and save it to your website server. Use social marketing, such as Digg, to bookmark the page you just tweaked with SEO marketing (see link in Resources). Typically, it can take several weeks for a search engine like Yahoo or Google to find your new web page and crawl it. Bookmarking it on a popular website such as Digg can help the search engine find your SEO website much faster.

8. Ask for links from the webmasters of relevant websites. A relevant website is a site that has similar content and a similar audience compared to your website. Search engines like it when a website has a lot of links from other websites. Search engines view such links as votes for your website’s reputation. The more links you can get, the higher your website might rank in the search engine’s results.

9. Check your ranking in the search engines to see how well your SEO marketing techniques are working. Type the keyword or phrase you are trying to target on your website. Go through the results and note what position your website is listed at. Modify your content with more keywords, and get more links from other websites. Wait a month and check the search engine results to see the results of your SEO marketing.
